REVIEW
Quite how this preposterous idea
ever made it off the drawing board is a mystery. Maybe the bosses at Verve
wanted to try something new with their star turn. Maybe it was Jimmy's idea.
Maybe Oliver Nelson's. Who can tell? Whatever it was, make it onto vinyl
it did and, against all the laws of dog and man, it works. In fact, it works
a treat, although quite how it works is as much of a mystery as why it happened
in the first place. But fret not! Instead, let's just all sit back and dig
the swinging suite that Oliver arranged and Jimmy and the rest of the band
swung so well. Would you believe that in amongst all the Prokofiev orchestral
themes, there are a few great soul jazz moments? No? Well go and get a copy.
Prove me wrong.
